Professional and Technical Solutions provide the engineering support services to lead, enable & innovate in the development of the Strategic Road Network.
The Asset Development Division (ADD) provides leadership and technical expertise for the design, assessment, construction and maintenance of the strategic road network and its associated structures. The structural asset alone is valued at £43bn, comprising 19,000 structures. Our engineers have the opportunity to focus on engineering issues across many diverse and challenging projects, providing them with opportunity to apply and develop their engineering skills, expertise and judgement on projects that really do make a difference to our country’s infrastructure.

We are looking for a Principal Structures Engineer (Team Leader) to join the Delivery Team within the Structures Technical & Engineering Groups (part of the Professional & Technical Solutions (PTS) Directorate).
The PTS directorate supports our operational delivery by developing standards and providing specialist technical services and advice to the wider business. As part of this directorate, the Structures Technical & Engineering Groups take the lead on setting the policy for the development and management of highway structures and are responsible for the technical governance of structural assets, contributing to Highways England best practice on design, construction, management and maintenance.
As a key member of our growing Structures Delivery Team of 40+ expert professionals, you will use your existing broad experience of highways structures and understanding of structural behaviour every day. You will consider structural risk and potential collapse mechanisms, in the application of Technical Approval procedures and contribute to best practice on design, construction, management and maintenance of highway structures. As part of the role you will have responsibility for liaising, influencing and managing professional engineers engaged within our supply chain on the structural aspects of Highways England projects. The role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in specific technical/specialist areas contributing to research and standards development, working with or alongside our Structure Policy Team.
As a Principal Advisor / Team Leader in our Delivery Team at Highways England, you will take the lead and manage a team in a customer facing role advising and working with a range of internal customers and externally with suppliers, contractors and designers. You will experience a varied and technically challenging workload that will use your significant engineering knowledge, to oversee the development, operation and maintenance of complex highway structures assets. You will be empowered to use the credibility that this affords, along with your communication and influencing skills, to make robust challenges to technical proposals promoted by others.
