Highways England is the new government owned company responsible for driving forward our motorways and major A roads. This includes; modernising and maintaining the highways, running the network and keeping traffic moving. Over recent years, investment in our highways has increased. This has led to advances in technology, such as smart motorways; enabling traffic to flow better. However, even more is yet to be done.
Certainty of funding and greater flexibility will enable us to become a better business. In our first 5 years alone, we’ll invest £11 billion in motorways and A roads – boosting capacity, tackling congestion and improving safety. At the same time, we’ll improve how we work. That means we will be able to; plan roadworks better to minimise disruption; clear incidents more quickly; and save more than £1 billion by working more efficiently.

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Advisor to join us as a Technical Content Specialist in our Geotechnical Team based from any of the following Highways England offices; Bedford, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Guildford or Manchester
The Geotechnics Team supports the operational delivery of Highways England’s Capital Programme by developing geotechnical standards and providing specialist technical advice, contributing to best practice on design, construction, management and maintenance.
As a Technical Content Specialist, you’ll have a high value, key role leading and coordinating the teams work to shape the future requirements of the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB). The changes to this document will not only benefit Highways England but also the wider industry sector. As a subject matter expert within Geotechnics, you’ll use your expertise to prepare and review content, working with other technical specialists in the team to peer review and give your input into the changes required.
Whilst your role is initially concerned with leading the changes to the technical standards in the DMRB, you’ll still be very hands on within the team as a Senior Advisor. You’ll apply your expertise to provide impartial geotechnical advice that is accurate, practical and timely, so that area and national improvement and maintenance programmes can be met and corporate governance maintained. There will also be opportunities to manage technical consultancy and research budgets, ensuring best value in the delivery of the project objectives.
As a passionate geotechnical engineer you’ll display a desire for continued development of yourself and the wider team, partaking in discussion groups, workshops and training activities.
