About Us

The Professional and Technical Solutions Directorate is responsible for supporting the operational delivery and improvement of Highways England’s road network by providing specialist technical advice to both internal and external parties. The Directorate develops standards and guidance and also includes business-wide services for Health and Safety.

This position sits within the Geotechnics and Pavements Group, which is responsible for the technical governance of the road pavement and earthwork assets and the provision of effective policy and technical advice, contributing to best practice on design, construction, management and maintenance.

Job Description

Highways England is currently recruiting for a Senior Geotechnical Advisor to be based in preferably Bedford, or alternatively Birmingham.

This is an opportunity for a motivated geotechnical engineer, as you will mostly be working independently and are expected to manage your workload effectively.

You will provide geotechnical advice and certification services to meet project leaders’ requirements, often working closely with supply chain designers and contractors.

You will also assist in the development and maintenance of relevant policy documents in line with technical innovations, industry best practice and Highways England objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide impartial geotechnical advice that is accurate, practical and timely so that regional and national improvement and maintenance programmes can be met and corporate governance maintained.
  • Contribute to the development and continual review of policy (in specific areas of the team’s work), ensuring effective communication of changes and developments within the team and to affected stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the continual review of relevant standards i.e. within the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB), BSI / CEN etc.
  • Contribute to the effective management of the budget for technical consultancy and research - ensuring best value, alignment to Highways England objectives and the effective management of consultants.
  • To ensure the continual development of self (and subsequently the team) in the field of geotechnics via discussion groups, workshops and training - ensuring a consistent understanding and provision of specialist advice.
  • Drive improvements in safety performance and lead by example whilst following the Highways England health and safety management system.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Register of Ground Engineering Professionals at Specialist level is desirable.
  • Experience in the application of geotechnical engineering to highway design, construction and maintenance.
  • Experience of working with a range of suppliers and stakeholders in the delivery of project objectives and in developing effective working relationships.
