About Us

Highways England is the new government owned company responsible for driving forward our motorways and major A roads. This includes; modernising and maintaining the highways, running the network and keeping traffic moving. Over recent years, investment in our highways has increased. This has led to advances in technology, such as smart motorways; enabling traffic to flow better. However, even more is yet to be done.

Certainty of funding and greater flexibility will enable us to become a better business. In our first 5 years alone, we’ll invest £11 billion in motorways and A roads – boosting capacity, tackling congestion and improving safety. At the same time, we’ll improve how we work. That means we will be able to; plan roadworks better to minimise disruption; clear incidents more quickly; and save more than £1 billion by working more efficiently.

Job Description

We are inviting applications from candidates with noise assessment and modelling experience to join us as Noise Advisor in our Environment Group within Professional Technical Solutions (PTS), based in our Manchester or Leeds offices.

PTS is responsible for supporting the operational delivery of our road network by developing standards, policy & methodologies, as well as providing technical advice to those areas of the company responsible for delivery.

As part of PTS, the Environment Group supports us in achieving high performance in the environmental, sustainability, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and social responsibility (including equality and diversity) aspects of our work. This is achieved through the development of policy and the provision of advice and guidance, and especially the development of truly collaborative partnerships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders.

As Noise Advisor, you will support the Principal Noise Advisor in ensuring that all activity on our network is delivered in a manner that does not harm the environment; but instead delivers long term benefits to the natural and built environment, creating a sustainable future for all. This will directly support organisation objectives including delivering better environmental outcomes, and you’ll play a key role in ensuring Highways England’s Noise and Vibration policies support good environmental design, legislative and policy compliance, as well as value for money.

This is an opportunity for you to further your professional profile by gaining unique and varied experience. If this sounds like your next career move, please demonstrate (by providing specific evidence) how you meet the following criteria:

Essential:

  • Degree qualified (BEng, BSc, BA, MEng, MSc, MA, HND/HNC Foundation Degree) in acoustics, or another relevant engineering or environmental subject supported by an Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience of undertaking environmental noise assessments of infrastructure developments (road noise experience not essential), or other forms of major development.
  • Proven capability of proficiency in noise modelling using specialist software, GIS and report writing.

Desirable:

  • Membership of Institute of Acoustics (or other relevant professional institute), or demonstrable evidence of working towards such membership.
  • Experience of providing specialist noise & vibration advice - including the assessment of impacts and mitigation design.
  • Ability to work independently.

Interviews will take place on 6 & 7 February 2017 in Birmingham and you will be informed by 30 January if you have been successful in being shortlisted for interview

All applications must be accompanied with a current CV which will be used to assess your suitability for the role. Please ensure all the skills, experience and qualifications requested are clearly demonstrated in your CV as explained in the body of the advert

Please note that Highways England reserve the right to close the advert before the advertised closing date should a sufficient response have been received.  Therefore, please complete your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
