Job Description

Highways England are currently recruiting talented Head of Risk to be based in our either our Birmingham / Manchester / Leeds office.

Role Purpose:

As Head of Risk you will be expected provide a governance framework for Risk Management to deliver its Regional Investment Programme (RIP) in a safe, customer and delivery focussed manner. 

Day to Day:

  • Demonstrate and engender Highways England values; Safety, Integrity, Passion, Teamwork and Ownership.
  • Establishing and refining a Programmatic Risk Management strategy specific to the RIP to ensure control of risk and realisation of opportunities.
  • Leadership of a core team of Risk Managers, ensuring a consistent high quality of service. Nb. Line management of risk managers is through the PMO managers.
  • Develop close working relationship with the RIP Head of Planning to ensure that time risks are fully understood at both Project & Programme level.
  • Work across the RIP Programme, building strong relationships with the regional PMO managers.
  • Developing in-house Risk Management capability.
  • Act as the focal point for developing Risk Management tools and systems at a Project, Programme and Portfolio level for the RIP, working with external consultants where required to embed new corporate wide systems and tools when deployed.
  • Through robust Risk Management drive measurable results in terms of reducing Highways England exposure across the RIP.
  • Acting as a source of authoritative advice on best practice Risk Management thought leadership.

About you:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing teams at a senior level in pro and programme environment.
  • A track record of delivering constructive working relationships within and across teams and suppliers.
  • Experience of leading and implementing performance improvement initiatives in Risk Management, people capability, systems and processes.
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to negotiate and manage teams to drive improved Risk Management across multi-disciplinary civil infrastructure projects and programmes.
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Strong relationship and presentational skills - able to engage effectively with senior staff and staff at other levels.
  • Degree qualification with professional accreditation to risk management professional.
  • Demonstrable evidence of continuous risk management personal professional development.
