Job Description

Are you an established Assistant Project Manager looking for your next challenge? Are you keen to work on a high profile scheme, which is of national interest? Highways England is recruiting a dynamic and driven individual to join the A14 Integrated Project Delivery Team.

Background:

CIP has been established to bring together an overall programme approach for the delivery of three major schemes; A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon, a new Lower Thames Crossing and A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down.

The A14, Cambridge to Huntingdon scheme is a £1.5 billion project to upgrade 21 miles of the A14, adding additional capacity and cutting up to 20 minutes off journeys. It is classed as “Tier 1”, meaning it is in the Government Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP), due to a combination of level of investment, complexity of stakeholder and political landscape and importance as elements of national infrastructure that will lead to wider economic growth.

The project is now at construction stage, which has taken the delivery team to our purpose built office space on-site. As an integral part of the delivery team, you will be based at our Swavesey compound and will also be required to travel to other compounds on the project, as well as to other Highways England offices, such as Bedford and Birmingham.

The role:

You will support the successful delivery of the A14 project to ensure it meets key strategic KPI’s to include efficiency, time and customer impact targets at both pre-construction and construction stage.

Some of your responsibilities will be:

  • Support the delivery of the construction phase including delivery assurance, change control, risk management and Highways England deliverables as part of a collaborative delivery team.
  • Plan and define project steps, scope project risks and issues, establish plans, reviews milestones and priorities.
  • Generate solutions to overcome project obstacles and mitigate risk
  • Develop, update, monitor and report against detailed project plans identifying resource requirements and interdependencies
  • Help commission and manage expert and consultancy support as appropriate; and evaluate and act on such advice to ensure objectives are achieved
  • Identify, develop and implement and monitor day-to-day support for the project activities including contract compliance, risk management, financial management and reporting, document control and governance.
  • Provide quality analysis and progress reporting to the Senior Responsible Owner, Project Board and other senior stakeholders
  • Help plan the migration of services from development into operations.
  • Support the delivery of the Health and Safety policy and standards by assessing safety performance to minimise risks, develop improvements and escalate issues with relevant authorities in a timely manner and carry out any tasks identified to the post in the Level 2 and relevant 2a Organisational Health & Safety RACI charts
  • Model best practice project management approaches to colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Identify ways to reduce costs and generate ideas that promote continuous improvement and innovation across projects to ensure that work is conducted in manner that takes into consideration wider stakeholders including the customer of HE.
  • Robustly manages costs, maximising value for money, sharing best practice across CIP

You will have:

  • Proven experience of project management in a complex environment
  • Experience of working with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to influence and lead
  • Superb problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ideally you will already have or will be working towards a project management qualification, such as PRINCE 2, MSP or similar
